BOBBI MATHUES, BROKER/OWNER
REALTY WORLD HOMETOWN, SIMSBURY, CT 06070
Welcome to the quaint and enchanting Farmington Valley in Central Connecticut.  The towns comprising the Farmington Valley are Simsbury, Avon, Farmington, Canton and the Granby's.  Come and enjoy our main streets and study our history.  You'll find old fashioned Yankee hospitality and colonial charm.  Our towns combine the charm of yesteryear with today's modern conveniences.  Browse in our fashionable boutique shops, enjoy a meal at one of our many fine restaurants, or have homemade ice cream while sitting on a bale of hay at Tulmeadow Farms in Simsbury.  We also have an active cultural life with community theatre, art galleries, festivals, and concerts in the park.  Simsbury is the summer home of the Hartford Symphony.  It is fun to pack a picnic dinner, grab a lawn chair and sit back and enjoy the Symphony under the stars in the meadow on Iron Horse Blvd. The following is a very short history of some of the Farmington Valley towns.

Avon, CT - Formerly the north parish of Farmington, Avon was primarily a farming community.  It's location at the crossroads of the Albany Turnpike and the Farmington Canal led to the emergence of a commercial center.  For many years travelers on the Canal dined and slept here on their way north.  Avon was settled in 1645 as part of Farmington and then incorporated in 1830 as a separate town.  Today it is home to many fine homes and an active retail area along Route 44.  Spend some time going through the shops in Old Avon Village along Route 44 as well.  Avon is the home of the 1st. Company Governor's Horse Guard, which was founded in 1778 and is the nation's oldest cavalry unit. And it is still in operation.

Canton, CT - A quaint slice of New England founded in 1806 in the maple-lined western hills of the Farmington River Valley.  Antique homes and rustic barns are visible throughout the villages that comprise Canton and are enhanced by the river setting of the historic Collinsville Axe Company, the center of a lively artist community.  Have a cup of coffee at the LaSalle Market and catch up on the town news, or enjoy a cocktail at the Crown & Hammer.  The Collinsville Axe Company now houses many antique dealers and it is fun to spend some time browsing through the antiques.  You might just find a bargain.

East Granby, CT - In 1859, Turkey Hills separated from Granby to become East Granby.  In the early 1700's America's first discovery of copper occurred here.  And, Connecticut's first state prison was established at the site of a copper mine in 1773.  Tories were imprisoned in it's dark tunnels during the American Revolution.  Today, you can walk through these underground caverns at the Old New-Gate Prison and Copper Mine.

Farmington, CT - Settled in 1640, Farmington is known for its history, charm, stately homes, quaint lodgings, superb restaurants, Miss Porter's School (Jackie Kennedy & Katherine Hepburn were students there), antiques, shopping, river rafting and ballooning.  The Stanley-Whitman house exhibits Colonial lifestyles.  The beautiful Hill-Stead Museum contains Pope family treasures including impressionist works by Monet, Degas, and Manet. Take a walking tour and learn about the Revolutionary War, the Tunxis Indians, Amistad, or the Underground Railroad.

Granby, CT - Some of Simsbury's earliest folks settled north along Salmon Brook, and took that name when establishing their own church society in 1739.  A half century later, Salmon Brook along with Turkey Hills became the town of Granby, and was primarily a farming town.  The crops were derived from apple orchards, dairy herds, and shade-grown tobacco.

Simsbury, CT - Simsbury is steeped in history and possess great natural beauty from the Farmington River's Tariffville Gorge to the hiking trails that crisscross its hills.  Simsbury is also home to Connecticut's largest tree, the Pinchot Sycamore.  We also have a beautiful flower bridge that is just spectacular in the summer.  Simsbury has a wide main street called Hopmeadow Street.  Take a stroll down Hopmeadow Street.  Enjoy dinner at Pettibone's Tavern which is said to be haunted, or visit one of our other fine restaurants.  Spend the night at the Simsbury 1820's House or the Simsbury Inn.  If a Bed and Breakfast is more your style try the Linden House or Merrywood.
